Geomagnetic Storm

St. Mark.s Church and cemetery near Brisco. One of the oldest buildings in the Valley.

A dazzling display of aurora a few nights ago. Willow and I headed north and stopped on the mile hill overlooking Radium Hot Springs. Knowing they can stop as quick as they start we kept going towards darker skies.

These Northern Lights were caused by activity on the surface of the sun. This coronal mass ejection struck Earth’s magnetic field and lit up the sky. It should have been a dark night, but Willow and I were able to walk around like it was a full moon.

By 3:30 the aurora borealis pulled way back and I could tell dawn was on the horizon. I forget how early morning breaks when the days are long. The longest days don’t even permit a fully dark night.

It was good to get out.

Lots of really nice color. We have aurora possible here in the middle of the US. But, there is so much haze from fires up in Canada I doubt if they will be visible.

Try again tonight. It sounds like we are still within the suns stream.
The fires in Saskatchewan and Manitoba sound awful. Those are fast moving fires. I figured you would be dealing with the smoke from them. I hope it isn’t too bad for you. Our fire season should get going shortly. I expect it will be a bad one. For one we have had a dry spring, but also the government will be lighting them to clear tracts of forest to protect inhabited areas and also make logging easier. BC has turned wild fire into a very lucrative business. I don’t expect to see another low fire year for some time.

I know that fire is a natural thing. But it is hard to accept when it impacts lives so much. Careful management is important so says a forester friend of ours.
Today some rain is supposed to move through. That will help clear the air.

it was a good night. Yes it is the same sun, but I think you have many more overcast days. We are overcast almost the entirety of winter, but our spring and summer is usually ho,hot, hot and clear.
