Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS has now emerged from the glare of the sun to become an evening comet.
Once again it was Lisa’s eagle eyes that was able to spot it just as we were about to give up. From our vantage point it was beside Mt. Nelson.
The photo was taken with a very wide angle lens, the same one I used to take the auroras, and the crop is a small part of the frame. If it is clear tomorrow evening I may give it another try with a lens that will make it appear closer.
It is always rewarding to spot comets, they are often a challenge. Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS may become easier to see as it rises into a darker sky. As it does, however it will quickly fade as it moves further away from earth on its journey back to the Oort Cloud. In 80 thousand years it will return.

Nice shot! I hoped to spot it the recent 3 evenings but no luck. This week will be better. The air is clearing out with a cold front.

Hi Jim. It wasn’t easy to see. It was due west about 1 hour after the sun went down. Now I know where to look, if clear, I am going to try with a longer lens, which will come with its own challenges. You may have luck with your camera with a digital zoom. Good luck.

Great photo – that must have been fantastic to see. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a comet. Are we likely to be able to see it in the UK?

Thank you Carol. You should be able to spot it in the UK. It would be above the spot on the horizon where the sun goes down. You will need clear skies and good eyes. Good luck.

Hi, presumably that’s just after the sun goes down and it goes properly dark? Of course, our weather has gone rubbish again so we’re not due to see clear sky again until Thu night now. Will it still be visible by then do you think?

Lisa has very good eyes. How is your garden coming, do you have your potatoes planted?

The garden is in the throes of being planted … and no spuds! But at last I’m getting a post together 🙂
