Travel

If someone asked me what has changed with the weather, I’d say, it’s windy now especially when it is hot in July and August. You can almost feel the moisture being sucked out of the ground. I can’t remember it that way when I was young.

I may be wrong. I am often called an imbecile by plenty of folks because I’ve never travelled. I can’t argue with them. However, I know what I see, the garden backs me up as well as the lake and mountains. I feel sorry for them, they are changing, some would say dying or even burning. I feel sorry because of the abuse. Still, they will be here much longer than we will.

We had word a fire was threatening the power supply to the valley. I thought about the food I have in the freezer. I thawed a leg of lamb and made vindaloo for the clan. Not a summer meal, but cooler than roasting it in the oven.

Several fires have started near by in the past couple days. The Horsetheif Fire came over the ridge this afternoon. It looks to be moving quickly. Edgewater, a community 25km north of us, is reporting burnt ash and needles falling on decks and vehicles.

The wind driving the fire is blowing south/east while a thunderstorm came in heading north/west. A double whammy.

Meanwhile, I am on my perch, where I’ve always been, the imbecile that I am, listening to tourists from Alberta race up and down Main Street in loud cars, RV’s and motorcycles.

This weekend I encountered a group of old bastards about my age, there must of been thirty of them, riding Indian Motorcycles all dressed in chaps and leather vests with the Indian insignia. I couldn’t help but think looking at these dip shits that we are all doomed.

It won’t be coking coal making steel that is our demise. It will be rich fuckers getting on planes, entitled to do as they please, without consequence, that will catch up to us.

Not that anybody’s listening, if you want to make a difference, stay home. Don’t bring millions of dollars worth of toys into a place you know nothing about just because you can. Stay home and make a life there.

Same here with tourists from all over, but Islanders do not help either, the idiots with the loud motorcycles are everywhere and nothing is being done about the bumper to bumper traffic in a town of 40K. Garbage everywhere but heck we are making money. Sad to see really, but no one wants to listen. Nova Scotia with the flooding in Halifax and surrounding got a good dose of reality now.

It is the excess of the tourists and second home owners that I can’t understand. It doesn’t make me feel good about the future. Take care and enjoy the weekend.

Not yet. Lisa, on the safe side, has put our valuables in Tupperware tubs in case we have to leave on a hurry .

The one in the photo has been brought under control. They used continuous water bombers on it. Those water bombers are something to watch. However several other fires have started nearby. I noticed several large lime green army style trucks today. They are forest fire fighters from California. The British Columbia government must have contracted them to help. Unusual, one would think they would be needed in California at this time. I noticed the trucks right away because they had the word ‘HOTSHOTS’ on the side of the truck which is what forest fire fighters are called in the US. When I was a youngster people were gathered out of the bars to fight forest fires. The governments reasoning was, if you have time to sit and drink you have time to fight fire. Things have changed. Take care and have a good weekend.

The map of fires burning in BC is alarming, Bob. I will keep you all in my thoughts, dear friend. 💜 I can smell the scent of smoke here in northeast Minnesota this morning.

I’ve been thinking along the lines of your last paragraph more and more as tourism escalates to unmanageable levels here since the Covid epidemic. And yet they’re still trying to get more to come here!

The smoke from those fires looks terrible and it sounds really scary!

Hi Carol, the thing that gets me about tourism and second home owners is the excess. It seems ridiculous to me in a day and age when we should be curbing such overindulgence, if for nothing else, the sake of the planet.

Agreed. I live a very parsimonious life and can’t see I’m really missing out on anything. So long as I can get out walking in the peace and quiet, I’m happy.
