It has been nice for Lisa and me to be enjoying the October air with a little dog cutting this way and that while she learns the smells and sights of the bush.
The garden is pretty much in, except for some beets and a heap of carrots. I am going to pull the carrots, trim and bag them up so Lisa can put up a notice on Facebook announcing free carrots. We have done this before with extra vegetables, and they go fast. We keep them out at the road for people to pick up.
The carrots are Royal Chantenay, short and fat, and look nothing like the carrots you buy in the store. This is why I trim, wash and bag them, so people will take a chance on them. It is surprising how some people will not take fresh garden veggies because they don’t look store bought. Once they taste the Royal Chantenay, they will be hooked. I don’t want a little dirt on them being the deciding factor in whether they are tried.

Only a few frosts in the valley bottom so far. I had a couple of tomato plants that were killed. It seems long overdue. It has been a long while since we have had a killer frost at the end of August.

It looks like your autumn is well ahead of ours. We had a very unusual September. Lot of rain. For the month we got about 10″ and normal is barely more than 3″. To top things off, we were up in northwest Washington state the last 2 weeks of the month. I didn’t expect it to rain much. I got home and emptied 7″ from my gauge. My yard looked like a hayfield ready to mow and bale. Finally got that cut down today.
I hope you are having fun with your new little dog. What was the name?

That is a lot of rain! I like the hayfield comment. Sounds like you had to throw a few bales like when you were a youngster on the farm.
We are having a great time with our little hound dog. Her name is Toast. She was named by Lisa and our granddaughter Scarlett before we got her. To their consternation I wouldn’t agree on the name before we saw the pup. When we met the dog for the first time, I wasn’t sure, then I picked her up and she was so warm. . . almost toasty.

Now the only heavy lifting I do is at the gym. When we were in the Tacoma area to see our son and family, I took part in a powerlifting meet. It was my 3rd this year. I benched almost 90 lbs and deadlifted 194. That got me a medal. I was the only person in my age/weight category.

What’s all the white cliffs in the last photo? I’m assuming it isn’t snow but some kind of chalky rock or suchlike?
I prefer to buy my carrots unwashed (although that’s hard to do here) – I always think that when you buy them in the supermarket washed, they go off quicker!
I’d hate a frost in August! It’s still fairly mild here (about 60degF in the day) but I’m finding it cold already – indoors anyway – it seems warmer outside. My heating has been on most of the month…

Ah, the beauty of the grotesque garden vegetables! When we lived in Vermont we learned to keep our car windows rolled nearly shut.so as not to find, when returning to the car, a fresh pile of vegetables, usually zucchini.

Ha ha! That’s funny. It is always tough to give away the abundance of zucchini.

Hi Julie. Good to hear your summer garden is just about in. The Chantenay carrot is a good one. They grow quite big if they are thinned (something I am often remiss to do as it feels too much like weeding).
