Good Work

The moon and Venus.

It is good to feel fall. It hasn’t been chilly. No sign of frost. The garden tomatoes are ripening.

Everyone I talk with is happy to have less tourists. It should be noted, these are folks, me included, who depend on tourism to live. It would be like a miner wanting the coal to disappear or a logger who didn’t want to cut down trees. What would we do without the thing we hate. The thing that feeds us.

A female Kingfisher hanging out on the old bridge.

It’s more reason to grab hold of every piece of peace you can, wherever it comes from. There is plenty in your control and more that isn’t. Figure out the difference and influence what you can. It’s good work if you can get it.

Damn big tomatoes!

I harvested possibly the last of my tomatoes today. Small but tasty. I need to cook up some bacon for the BLTs. No sign of frost yet here. Normal date is about Sep 30. We have a while yet.

Frost is late here. It is as clear as a bell so will have to watch the hours 5 to 8 in the morning. Still have a lot of tomatoes out there and it would be awful to lose them.

Getting older, I have to get up in the wee small hours to pee… I’ve been very heartened and cheered this week to see the new moon and Venus shining brightly (here they’re side by side) – truly beautiful.

Very nice sight (the stars, not you peeing 🙂 ). I don’t want you to get the wrong idea.

Seriously, if you are up close to dawn look for Sirius below Orion. It is the brightest star and not far away is Venus the brightest planet. You will notice the star Venus tinkles more I mean TWINKLES more – Freudian slip. 🙂

I will have a look for Sirius – thank you. I know precious little about which star or constellation is which – only the really well-known ones. Mind you, our weather is so awful this week you can barely see at all – it was dark all day today and didn’t stop raining once. Very cold too…

We have three young people from the UK working at the resort. They are awesome workers. I joke with Jack that I can see how they colonized half the world with their work ethic. They are not used to seeing the stars. They are also very happy for the cooler weather .

I picked one today that weighed 1lb 10oz. Still waiting for frost to sweeten the cabbage and kale. Do you have your plants and seeds in the ground? You have to get the spuds planted if you want them ready for Christmas.
