I get a Greater Spotted Woodpecker (well 2 actually – probably a pair) every day on my feeder. They’re pretty greedy and don’t let the smaller birds in till they’ve done!
The males are usually the brighter coloured. I believe this is true of most bird species but not all. Kingfishers are an example where the female has more colour.

Yes, woodpeckers of any size or breed will keep away the other birds.

I’ve got 3 of ’em now! Don’t know what sex they are – are the females usually brightly coloured as well as the males?
