Palliser Fire

Burnt trees between the mountain and creek bed.

The Palliser Fire is still going in places. Forest fires have been known to burn roots underground for months. Lisa and I wandered around. Lisa was hurt to see some of our favourite places burned. Rock Creek was burned badly.

The forest floor reduced to rock as a new cycle begins.

The fire burned 9000 hectares. It was managed by a large firefighting crew who seemed to control it and let it burn. That is the way forest fires will be managed now. Forest fire management has become an industry unto itself.

A rocky crag with hundreds of waiting deadfalls.
Life renewed from ground still warm with fire.

I feel bad clicking ‘like’ on that really. Awful to see the bare rock everywhere. The ground does stay hot for a long time though – I went to see where there had been a fire near Loch Ness while I was staying there and it took days to cool. Also we used to have fires on our moor and that stayed warm for days too. It was weird walking there with such warm ground.

I have heard some of the rich peat filled soil can burn for a long time. Here, one has to be careful walking as the ash is the same colour as the rock and it can fill holes that a person could unwittingly fall into. Once it rains a bit the ash settles.
